EX374 earns you the Red Hat Certified Specialist in Developing Automation with Ansible Automation Platform. It is not a written paper. Red Hat gives you one or more virtual systems and a list of real tasks, and you have four hours to complete them. There are no multiple choice questions and nothing to guess at.

Three details decide how you should prepare. You get no internet access during the exam, and you may not bring any documentation, printed or electronic. Every configuration must survive a reboot without you touching it — Red Hat states this for all its performance-based exams, and it is a common way to lose marks on work that was otherwise correct. And Red Hat does not publish a passing score or tell you which individual items you got wrong. Why a hands-on exam needs hands-on preparation

There is no way to revise for EX374 by reading. The exam hands you systems and a task list, and marks whether the systems end up in the right state. Every skill it tests is muscle memory: writing a filter chain without looking it up, knowing which variable wins when three define the same name, remembering that the change has to survive a reboot.

So the work below is all building, breaking and rebuilding on live systems. Each lab ends with a reboot and a re-check, because that is what the exam does. Sessions run live online across India, and the same labs run in the classroom at our Kharadi campus in Pune.

Project List
  • Repository structure from scratch: lay out a playbook repository in Git that a team can work in — roles, group_vars, collections requirements — then sync it into automation controller and fix the first sync failure yourself.
  • Variable precedence experiment: define the same variable at seven different levels, then predict which one wins before you run it. Almost nobody gets all seven right the first time, and that is the point.
  • Dynamic inventory: replace a static inventory with an inventory plugin sourcing hosts from a cloud provider, and handle the case where a host disappears mid-run.
  • Loops beyond lists: iterate over dictionaries and nested structures, then rewrite a playbook that used with_items into current syntax and compare the output.
  • Error handling that tells the truth: use blocks, rescue and always, and set changed_when and failed_when so a run reports what actually happened rather than a wall of green.
  • Lookups and external data: pull values from files, environment and an HTTP API into a playbook, and handle the lookup failing without taking the whole run down.
  • Filter chains on networking data: take a messy structure of interfaces and addresses and reshape it into exactly what a template needs. This is the objective candidates most often underestimate.
  • Delegation and rolling updates: update a load-balanced service with serial and delegate_to so it stays available throughout, then prove it stayed available.
  • Build a content collection: package your roles and plugins into a collection, version it, build it and publish it to private automation hub, then consume it from a separate project.
  • Execution environment from scratch: build an image with ansible-builder, pin its Python dependencies, then debug a playbook that runs locally and fails inside the environment.
  • Controller in anger: job templates with surveys, a workflow with an approval node, RBAC for two teams, schedules and notifications — then read a failed job’s output and find the cause.
  • Full mock exam: four hours, live systems, no internet, no notes, and a reboot at the end. Run at least twice before you book.
