Course Overview

AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) Exam Details
What the exam actually is

SAA-C03 is a written exam, not a lab. You get 65 questions in 130 minutes, all of them multiple choice or multiple response, and you sit it with Pearson VUE either at a test centre or online with a remote proctor. There is no console, no CLI and nothing to build during the exam. What it tests is judgement: given a business requirement, a budget and a constraint, can you pick the right AWS services and defend the choice against the AWS Well-Architected Framework.

Our programme prepares you for it with live online sessions across India, and classroom sessions at our Kharadi campus in Pune. Every figure on this page comes from AWS’s own exam guide and certification policy pages, linked at the end of this section. Where AWS does not publish a number, we say so rather than guess.

Number of questions 65 in total — 50 that count towards your score and 15 that do not. The 15 unscored questions are AWS trialling new items, and they are not marked on the paper, so answer everything as if it counts.
Question format Two types only. Multiple choice: one correct answer and three distractors. Multiple response: two or more correct answers out of five or more options. This is not a performance-based exam — there is no hands-on lab component.
Negative marking None. There is no penalty for guessing, but an unanswered question is scored as incorrect — so never leave one blank.
Passing score 720 on a scaled range of 100–1,000. It is a scaled score, not a percentage, so it does not translate to “72% correct”. Scaling exists so that scores compare fairly across exam forms of slightly different difficulty.
Section pass requirement None. AWS uses a compensatory scoring model — you do not need to pass each domain individually, only the exam overall.
Exam fee 150 USD (AWS Associate-level price). AWS bills in local currency for a set of countries that includes the Indian rupee, so the amount you actually pay is shown in INR at the Pearson VUE booking screen, and applicable taxes are added on top. AWS notes that prices vary by country. We do not print a rupee figure here because it changes with exchange rate and tax — confirm it at booking.
Delivery Pearson VUE test centre, or online with a remote proctor.
Validity 3 years. AWS requires you to recertify every three years.
Recommended experience At least one year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions that use AWS services. Nothing is enforced — you can book SAA-C03 with no prior certification. If you have no IT work experience at all, AWS suggests starting with AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner.
Languages 10: English, French (France), Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Latin America), Spanish (Spain), Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.
Retake policy If you fail, you must wait 14 calendar days before you can sit it again. There is no cap on attempts, but each attempt is paid in full. Once you pass, you cannot retake the same exam for two years.
Exam Content Outline and Weightings

These are AWS’s own domains and percentages, taken from the SAA-C03 exam guide. The percentages apply to the scored content.

4. Design Cost-Optimized Architectures 20% Cost-optimised storage, compute, database and network solutions — the domain most candidates underprepare for.

Notice that security carries the largest share at 30%, and cost the smallest at 20%. That is roughly the ratio we give them in the programme, because study time spent out of proportion to the blueprint is study time wasted.

Results and Score Report
  • Score needed: 720 or above on the 100–1,000 scale. Below that is a fail. Because the score is scaled, the same number can represent a different count of correct answers on two different exam forms.
  • When you get your result: AWS states that results are available within five business days of finishing, in your AWS Certification Account under Exam History. It is not emailed to you, and it is not instant.
  • What the report shows: a downloadable PDF with your overall scaled score, pass or fail, and a table classifying your performance at each section level. AWS explicitly advises caution when reading section-level feedback — sections carry different numbers of questions, so those bands cannot be added up.
  • Your certificate and badge: issued in your AWS Certification Account, not by any training provider. You claim and share the digital badge yourself.
  • Passing scores are not published per exam: AWS states that passing scores are set by statistical analysis and are subject to change, and that it does not publish them for every exam. The 720 figure above is AWS’s published minimum for Associate-level exams and appears in the SAA-C03 exam guide itself.
  • Preparation support in this programme: mock exams written against the four-domain blueprint above, hands-on labs in a real AWS account, and full-length timed attempts so that 130 minutes for 65 questions stops feeling tight.

Why an architecture exam still needs hands-on work

SAA-C03 never asks you to type a command, so it is tempting to prepare for it by reading. That fails, and it fails in a specific way: the questions are written as trade-offs between two options that both work, and you cannot tell which one the requirement points to unless you have felt the difference. You will not know what a NAT gateway costs until you have left one running. You will not know how long an RDS Multi-AZ failover really takes until you have triggered one.

So the labs below exist to build judgement, not to build a portfolio. Each one ends with a written decision: which option you chose, and which Well-Architected pillar you traded away to get it. Sessions run live online across India, and the same labs run in the classroom at our Kharadi campus in Pune.

Project List
  • Multi-AZ VPC from scratch: build public and private subnets across two Availability Zones with route tables, an internet gateway and a NAT gateway, then work out from first principles why a private instance can reach the internet but nothing can reach it. Compare security groups against network ACLs on the same traffic and see which one actually blocked it.
  • IAM and least privilege: design an access model with users, groups, roles and policies, set up cross-account access with a role rather than shared keys, and then deliberately over-grant a policy and read what CloudTrail recorded. Domain 1 is 30% of the paper and most of it lives here.
  • Highly available web tier: put an Application Load Balancer in front of an Auto Scaling group spanning two AZs, configure health checks, then terminate an instance during a load test and measure how long the gap actually lasted.
  • S3 storage strategy: move objects between Standard, Infrequent Access, Glacier Instant Retrieval and Deep Archive with lifecycle rules, turn on versioning and cross-region replication, issue a presigned URL, and settle the bucket policy versus IAM policy question by testing both.
  • Database availability and scale: stand up RDS with Multi-AZ, force a failover and time it, then add a read replica and see why a replica is not a failover target. Contrast the whole thing with DynamoDB on-demand versus provisioned capacity.
  • Decoupling with SQS and SNS: put a queue between a producer and a consumer, deliberately overwhelm the consumer to see queue-based load levelling work, then configure a dead-letter queue and fan out with SNS.
  • Serverless design: build an API Gateway, Lambda and DynamoDB stack, then measure cold starts and concurrency limits so you can answer honestly when an exam question asks whether serverless is the right fit.
  • Edge and DNS: put CloudFront in front of an S3 origin with a TLS certificate from ACM, configure cache behaviours and origin failover, and route traffic with Route 53 using failover and latency-based routing policies.
  • Encryption and secrets: create and rotate KMS keys, encrypt an S3 bucket and an EBS volume, store a database credential in Secrets Manager instead of a config file, and understand what a key policy allows that an IAM policy does not.
  • Backup and disaster recovery: configure AWS Backup with cross-region copies, then plan the same workload as backup-and-restore, pilot light and warm standby, and put a real cost and a real RTO against each of the three.
  • Monitoring and cost control: set CloudWatch alarms and dashboards, enable CloudTrail, then open Cost Explorer on the environment you built, find the three resources driving the bill, and quantify the saving from right-sizing, Savings Plans or a storage tier change.
  • Well-Architected review: take one architecture you built earlier in the course and review it against all six pillars, writing down what you would change and what you would knowingly accept. This is the closest thing to the exam’s actual thinking style.

A note on college projects: if your college or university has a fixed project specification, share it with us and we will map the lab work to it where the syllabus allows. If a requirement falls outside what this course covers, we will say so rather than promise to cover it.

SAA-C03 is a 130-minute, 65-question exam you can sit at a Pearson VUE centre or online, proctored: you solve tasks from a command line in a browser terminal on your own machine. Training in exactly that setup means exam day is not the first time you work that way. The labs are cloud-hosted, so a classroom seat would give you the same browser terminal anyway — there is no lab hardware you would be missing out on.

Our only classroom is in Kharadi, Pune. Rather than claim a Surat centre we do not have, we deliver the same course live online to learners here. Sessions are two-way: you speak, share your screen and get your cluster debugged in real time, and you also get a chat channel to ask questions without interrupting the class.

Three things that matter for this exam specifically. Every session is recorded and stays available for a year, so you can replay a troubleshooting demo the night before the exam — a classroom session is gone once it ends. You read the trainer’s terminal on your own screen at your own font size instead of squinting at a projector, which matters when the work is all command line. And the hours you would have spent commuting go into lab time, which is what actually moves your SAA-C03 score.

A laptop or desktop, a stable internet connection of around 5 Mbps, and a headset. The labs run in your browser, so you do not need a powerful machine — no local cloud environment and no 16 GB RAM requirement.
