Course Overview

Google Cloud Certification Exam Details (Associate Cloud Engineer & Professional Cloud Architect)
Two exams, and the honest bit first

Google Cloud runs these differently from AWS and Microsoft, and the difference matters when you prepare. Google does not publish a passing score. Its own wording is that the exams are designed to determine only whether an individual meets a minimum passing standard, so only pass or fail results are provided. It also does not publish percentage weightings for the exam sections. Any training site quoting you “70% to pass” or “Section 3 is 22% of the exam” for a Google Cloud certification has made those numbers up.

What Google does publish is the section list, the case studies, the fees, the retake waiting periods and the validity. All of that is below, taken from Google Cloud’s own certification and support pages, which are linked at the end of this section. Our programme covers both exams in sequence, delivered live online across India, with classroom sessions at our Kharadi campus in Pune.

Score report If you do not pass, you get section-by-section feedback in the Candidate Portal showing the approximate percentage of exam content drawn from each area, so you can see where you were weak. Reports are not provided for beta exams or renewal exams.
Retake waiting periods After a first fail, 14 days. After a second, 60 days. After a third, 365 days. These apply to both associate and professional exams.
Attempt limit Maximum four attempts in a two-year period for associate and professional certifications. All attempts count towards that limit regardless of the language you sat it in or whether it was online or onsite. This is a real constraint — treat the first attempt as the one that matters.
Exam fee in rupees Google publishes the fee in USD and adds “plus tax where applicable”. What you actually pay in INR is settled at the Pearson VUE booking screen. We do not print a rupee figure here because it moves with exchange rate and tax.

The Case Studies — Your Biggest Advantage

This is the part candidates waste. Google publishes the case studies in advance in the Professional Cloud Architect exam guide, and two of them appear on your paper carrying 20–30% of the marks. They are currently the Altostrat media case study, the Cymbal retail case study, the EHR Healthcare case study, and the Knight Motives automotive case study.

You can read all four before you ever book the exam. We work each one end to end in class: the stated business requirements, the technical requirements, the constraints hidden in the executive statement, and the architecture each one points to. Walking into a paper where a fifth of the marks come from documents you have already worked through is the easiest advantage to take on this exam, and most candidates skip it.

  • Case studies worked in class: all four official case studies, read as requirement documents rather than as stories, with the architecture derived in front of you.
  • Timed full-length attempts: two hours for 50–60 questions plus split-screen case study reading is tighter than it sounds. We run it under clock at least twice before you book.
  • Labs in a real Google Cloud project: not a simulator, so you meet actual quotas, actual IAM propagation delays and actual billing behaviour.
  • Sequencing advice, honestly given: Google enforces no prerequisite, so if your experience already covers the associate ground we will tell you to skip straight to the architect exam rather than sell you two courses.
  • Attempt-limit awareness: because you get four attempts in two years and a 365-day wait after a third fail, we would rather delay your booking by three weeks than watch you burn an attempt.
  • Certificate and badge: issued by Google Cloud in your certification profile, not by any training provider. You claim and share it yourself.

Why an architecture exam still needs hands-on work

Neither of these exams asks you to type a command, so it is tempting to prepare by reading. That fails in a specific way: the questions present two designs that both work, and you cannot tell which one the requirement points to unless you have felt the difference. You will not know what a Cloud NAT gateway costs until you have left one running. You will not know why a folder-level IAM grant is dangerous until one of yours has quietly given a service account more than you intended.

So the labs below build judgement rather than a portfolio. Each ends with a written decision: what you chose, and what you knowingly traded away. Sessions run live online across India, and the same labs run in the classroom at our Kharadi campus in Pune.

Project List
  • Resource hierarchy and billing: lay out an organization with folders, projects and a billing account for a company with two business units, apply Organization Policy constraints, and watch a policy set at folder level take effect on a project nobody remembered was there.
  • IAM done properly: replace basic roles with predefined and custom roles, set up a service account with impersonation instead of a downloaded key, configure Workload Identity Federation, then audit the whole thing with Policy Analyzer.
  • VPC design: build a VPC with subnets across two regions, firewall rules, Cloud NAT and Private Google Access, then work out why an instance with no external IP can still reach a Google API but nothing can reach it.
  • Shared VPC versus peering: build both for the same two-team scenario, then argue which the requirement actually called for and what each costs in administrative overhead.
  • Compute and autoscaling: deploy a managed instance group with an autoscaling policy and a health check, kill an instance during a load test, and measure how long the gap really lasted.
  • GKE Standard versus Autopilot versus Cloud Run: deploy the same containerised service three ways, then compare what you control, what you pay and what you are on the hook to operate.
  • Storage strategy: move objects between Standard, Nearline, Coldline and Archive with lifecycle rules, turn on versioning and a retention policy, and issue a signed URL for controlled external access.
  • Database selection: stand up Cloud SQL with high availability, force a failover and time it, then place the same workload on Spanner, Firestore and Bigtable and justify which access pattern each one suits.
  • Load balancing: put a global external Application Load Balancer, a regional one and an internal one in front of the same workload, and settle which the traffic pattern needs rather than which is most familiar.
  • Security and encryption: encrypt with Google-managed keys, then with CMEK through Cloud KMS, rotate a key, store a credential in Secret Manager, and put Cloud Armor and IAP in front of a service instead of exposing it publicly.
  • Operations and SLOs: build Cloud Monitoring dashboards and alerting policies, query Cloud Logging, define an SLO with an error budget, and use it to find a fault an instructor introduced without telling you.
  • Cost analysis: export billing to BigQuery, query it, find the three resources driving the bill, and quantify the saving from committed use discounts, Spot VMs or right-sizing before you touch anything.
  • The four official case studies: take Altostrat, Cymbal, EHR Healthcare and Knight Motives one at a time, produce an architecture for each, and defend it against the Google Cloud Architecture Framework when the requirement changes halfway through.

A note on college projects: if your college or university has a fixed project specification, share it with us and we will map the lab work to it where the syllabus allows. If a requirement falls outside what this course covers, we will say so rather than promise to cover it.

The Professional Cloud Architect exam runs 2 hours with 50–60 questions, sat online-proctored or at a Pearson VUE centre: you solve tasks from a command line in a browser terminal on your own machine. Training in exactly that setup means exam day is not the first time you work that way. The labs are cloud-hosted, so a classroom seat would give you the same browser terminal anyway — there is no lab hardware you would be missing out on.

Systems administrators, developers, support engineers and infrastructure staff who already work with servers, networks and databases and now design or run workloads on Google Cloud. Google recommends 3 or more years of industry experience, including at least one year designing and managing solutions on Google Cloud, before sitting the Professional Cloud Architect exam. For the Associate Cloud Engineer exam it recommends around six months of hands-on Google Cloud experience. Neither exam enforces a prerequisite — those are recommendations, not gates.

If you have never opened a cloud console, the case studies will feel abstract, because the exam tests judgement about trade-offs rather than recall of service names. If you want a certificate without doing lab work, two case studies worth up to 30% of the paper will find that out. And if you are shopping for a course that promises you the exact percentage weight of each exam section, we cannot sell you that honestly — Google publishes its section list but not the weightings, so anyone quoting them is guessing.

Read a written business case with a budget, a compliance constraint and an availability target, and produce a Google Cloud architecture from it: set up the resource hierarchy and IAM, design the VPC, choose compute and storage and a database that fit the access pattern, secure it with Cloud KMS and Organization Policy, make it survive a zone failure, and put a cost against every choice — then defend the design when the requirement changes.

You should be comfortable with basic networking, Linux administration, and the idea of servers, storage and databases. Google recommends about a year of hands-on Google Cloud experience for the architect exam; we cover the services from the ground up, but the pace assumes those basics are in place.
