Course Overview

The curriculum follows the the eight published Terraform Associate objectives and weights them the way the exam does — troubleshooting carries the most marks, so it gets the most lab time. You build environments, break things deliberately, and fix what you did not build.

A short exam that people still fail

The Terraform Associate is one hour long, sat online-proctored from your own machine, and costs 70.50 USD plus locally applicable taxes. There is no test-centre option and no prerequisite certification. On paper it is the most approachable exam on this site.

It still catches people out, for one reason: HashiCorp does not publish a passing score and does not publish a question count. There is no percentage to aim at and no way to pace yourself against a known number of questions. What you can do is work the eight published objectives until each one is genuinely familiar, which is how this programme is structured. Sessions run live online across India, with classroom sessions at our Kharadi campus in Pune.

Objective 8 is the one self-taught candidates most often skip, because HCP Terraform is the part you do not meet if you only ever run Terraform locally. It is examinable, so we cover it properly.

  • Current version, not old material: the exam is based on Terraform 1.12, so we teach current syntax and behaviour rather than patterns from the 0.x era that still circulate in free tutorials.
  • Real cloud accounts, not a simulator: you run apply against real provider APIs, so you meet real rate limits, real dependency ordering and real partial failures.
  • State treated as the hard part: because it is. We deliberately corrupt a state file and have you recover it, which is the fastest way to understand what state actually holds.
  • HCP Terraform included: objective 8 gets its own sessions rather than a mention at the end.
  • Timed practice: one hour with no published question count means pacing has to be a habit. We run full-length timed attempts before you book.
  • Your certificate and badge: issued by HashiCorp, not by any training provider. You claim and share it yourself.

We last checked it on 30 August 2026. HashiCorp revises exam versions and fees without notice — if you find a difference on their site, theirs is correct, and we would be glad to be told.

Why one hour of questions needs weeks of applying

The Terraform Associate asks what a command does, what a plan output means, and which construct fits a situation. Those look like recall questions, but they are not: the wrong answers are all plausible, and you separate them by having watched Terraform behave. You will not confidently answer a question about for_each versus count until you have refactored a configuration and watched count destroy and recreate resources you only wanted to rename.

So the work below is about running things and reading what came back. Every lab ends with a written note on what the plan said, what you expected, and where the two differed. Sessions run live online across India, and the same labs run in the classroom at our Kharadi campus in Pune.

Project List
  • First working configuration: provision a network, a server and storage from scratch, then read every line of the plan before approving it and predict what will change.
  • Variables and outputs done properly: parameterise that configuration with typed variables, validation rules and sensible defaults, then expose outputs another configuration can consume.
  • count versus for_each: build the same set of resources both ways, then rename one item in the middle and watch exactly what each approach destroys. This single lab answers a disproportionate share of exam questions.
  • Write your own module: extract the working configuration into a reusable module with a clean interface, publish it to a Git source, and consume it from two different environments.
  • Version pinning experiment: deliberately leave a module and provider unpinned, upgrade underneath it, and see what breaks. Then pin properly and repeat.
  • Remote state and locking: move local state to a remote backend, then have two people apply at once and watch the lock do its job.
  • State surgery: import a resource somebody created by hand, move a resource to a new address without recreating it, and remove one from state without destroying it.
  • Break and recover state: corrupt a state file on purpose, then recover the environment. Uncomfortable, and the fastest possible lesson in what state means.
  • Drift detection: change a resource by hand in the cloud console, then decide from the plan output whether to correct the drift or adopt it into configuration.
  • Secrets without leaks: supply credentials and sensitive values in a way that keeps them out of the repository, out of the plan output and out of shared state.
  • HCP Terraform workspaces: move a configuration to remote runs, set up variable sets, add a run trigger between two workspaces, and enforce a policy that blocks a non-compliant apply.
  • Terraform in CI: plan on a pull request, require an approval, apply on merge — and work out what should happen when a plan goes stale between review and merge.

Take a cloud environment somebody built by hand and reproduce it in Terraform: write the configuration, split it into reusable modules, move state to a remote backend with locking, wire it into a CI pipeline that plans on a pull request and applies on merge, detect and resolve drift, and upgrade a provider version on a live estate without destroying anything.

You should be comfortable at a terminal and understand the basics of cloud infrastructure — networks, servers, storage, identity. HashiCorp asks for exactly that and nothing more. We cover HCL from the ground up, but the pace assumes you have used at least one cloud console before.
